What you really need to hear during a divorce

For many residents of Orange County and the rest of the country, the emotions accompanying a divorce may seem overwhelming. One divorced mother recently recounted her experience, which was not pleasant. However, she was able to provide some advice for those people who only want to help by offering a word of encouragement or "the most trite of expressions."

One expression you will likely hear is that "you're better off." While you may think that the day will never come when you will feel like your divorce was a good thing, the divorced mother said that she woke up one day and realized that she really was "better off." She's married again and had another child. She realized that appreciating herself was more important than having someone else appreciate her.

Of course, you will likely have many friends and family members that will say, "I'm here if you need to talk." You may not feel like talking, but it will help if you do. You may feel like you're taking advantage of relationships with family and friends for awhile, but having a strong support system is crucial to moving on. There will likely be a time when one of your friends or family members will go through a similar situation and need your support.

Finally, the sentiment you are likely to hear from everyone from your mailman to your child's teachers is, "I'm sorry." This may be difficult for you to hear, but realize that these people really don't like seeing you in this situation and only want the best for you. Keep these people close to you and stock up on the support and helpful emotions now surrounding you.

While divorce is difficult, frustrating and sometimes hurtful, it is possible to move on. Gathering a team of legal professionals, financial experts and even a therapist - in addition to your friends and family - may be just what you need to see "a light at the end of the tunnel."
