R. Kelly, an R&B singer who has sold over 40 million albums during his career, is reportedly not in good shape financially. The singer has reportedly become completely "unreachable" and is facing possible jail time if he does not appear in court on March 27.
The singer is no stranger to controversy. Over the years, he's been accused of sexual misconduct with minors, failing to pay more than $100,000 in child support for his three children with his ex-wife and owing his lawyers several thousands of dollars for legal fees and expenses. The upcoming court date is a date that was rescheduled from last November and was supposed to address child support and child custody issues. His attorneys have allegedly said that Kelly could face between 30 and 180 days in jail if he doesn't appear at the March hearing.
The singer allegedly paid the $100,000 in child support that he had in arrears last year. The latest filing by his ex-wife states that he is behind in child support payments of $20,833 a month once more.
Kelly has had significant financial problems over the years, including this year's auction of a home that had an unpaid mortgage, and he owed millions in taxes at one point as well.
There are also reports that his law firm will withdraw from his case if he doesn't appear in March. This is likely true if the attorneys don't hear from him or if he does indeed have unpaid legal fees.
Most people don't have to worry about $20,000 child support payments. However, even minimal payments can be difficult to make in some cases. Child support modification hearings may help with getting a lower monthly child support payment or asking the court to raise the payment. An experienced California family law attorney can provide more information about your rights and responsibilities in such cases.
