When a person loses his or her job, this will impact his or her life in a number of ways. Regardless of the reason for the job loss, from termination to layoffs, it can lead to extreme personal and financial stress.
With this in mind, unemployment often has a way of leading to divorce. Some couples are not equipped to deal with this setback, feeling that the only way to make things better is to split.
There are several reasons for the correlation between a layoff and divorce:
— Brings other issues to the forefront. If marital dissatisfaction was already a problem, the job loss may be the “straw that breaks the camel’s back.”
— Uncertainty about the future. When a person is out of work, there is a lot of uncertainty regarding the future of the family. This can lead to powerful negative emotions, thus causing marital problems and an eventual divorce.
— Societal expectations. It isn’t out of the ordinary for one spouse to feel let down by the other. For example, a wife may feel that her husband is no longer able to care for her if he is out of work. This can lead to a variety of emotions that eventually result in divorce.
There is no denying the fact that unemployment can put stress on a marriage. Does this mean that it always causes divorce? Of course not. However, there are times when a person being unemployed can have a negative impact on a relationship.
