What does my child support cover?

On Behalf of | Dec 29, 2017 | Child Support

A lot of people are misinformed about what child support is supposed to cover. In addition to providing a child with a decent living situation, clothing and food, there are may other expenses that can be met with child support.

If you receive or pay child support, you should be aware that these payments can go toward school tuition and fees, medical care, extracurricular activities and entertainment expenses for the kids.

But that’s not all. Child support can go toward a mortgage or rent payment, utilities, even a car payment, as the parent needs to be able to transport the children wherever they need to go.

A parent can use child support to maintain the vehicle, pay for registration, gas and auto insurance. It may also be used to pay for public transit, including air fare and other travel costs.

A parent can use all or part of the child support to pay for any medical expenses that are not covered by insurance, including deductibles and co-pays. If the kids need glasses or braces, child support payments can be used for these medical expenses.

Anything related to the child’s schooling can be covered by child support — lunch and book fees, uniforms or school clothes, tutoring and fees for extracurricular activities like sports or cheerleading.

If a parent has the kids in day care or incurs other child care expenses so that he or she can go to work, he or she can use support payments to pay for these child care expenses.

If you have any questions about whether or not your child support payments can cover an expense, an Orange County family law attorney may be able to address your concerns.
