Using technology to catch a cheating spouse

It used to be that when you suspected your spouse of cheating, you had to fork over a lot of money to hire a private detective to get the goods on the cheater. However, with today's technologies, the ability to bust a spouse who's stepping out of the marriage is literally at your fingertips.

Both iPhones and Androids have spy apps capable of tracking a person's every move, both online and in real life. It's also possible to install spy cameras so small that they can be concealed almost anywhere.

Below are some indications that your spouse may be having an affair:

They have a second phone

While some jobs require a work phone, most don't. If your spouse suddenly begins using two phones, they might be carrying on an affair with one of them.

They lock or hide their phone

Everyone needs some personal privacy -- even from their spouse. However, if you notice that your spouse has become extra cagey with their phone (for example, changing lock screen codes or walking away to send or check texts), something might be up.

You spot unusual digital receipts

Digital receipts are becoming more common these days. If you spot some digital receipts online for flowers or jewelry that you never received, or if you spy unfamiliar restaurant meals or hotel stays listed, something is likely awry in your marriage.

Frequent flyer miles disappear

Your spouse might not be putting affair-related expenses on plastic, but that doesn't mean other resources aren't being tapped. If the balance of the credit card points or frequent flyer miles drops precipitously, it could indicate they were spent on trysts.

Payments could also be made via PayPal, Venmo or Groupon, so be aware of any fluctuations in these accounts.

Once you have evidence of infidelity, you need to strategize. Don't pounce on your spouse in a tirade without first determining a viable course of action. Do you want to salvage your marriage and attempt counseling, or are you ready to throw in the towel on the relationship?

California is a community property state, so it's important to review the legal ramifications of your decision with a trusted California family law attorney before filing for divorce.
