Can my child support include the kids’ summer camp fees?

| Jun 14, 2019 | Child Support

Parents, does it ever seem like your child support amount shrinks during the summer? While the amount stays the same all 12 months, having the kids home for the better part of three months has some definite financial consequences.

With that in mind, some parents wonder if their children’s other parents can be forced to kick in some extra dollars to cover summer camp tuition and other related expenses.

The answer is that it depends on how those expenses are structured. For instance, are you sending your child to summer camp wholly or in part because the camp sessions your child attends are in lieu of traditional child care you would otherwise have to arrange?

If the answer is yes, you may be able to seek at least partial reimbursements for the money that you spend. If summer camp is more of a discretionary activity for your child, the chance is lesser that you could recover any of your expenditures unless your spouse agrees to split the cost or foot the bill.

Sometimes, a frank but civil discussion with the child support-paying parent can yield good results. After all, the two of you should be basing all decisions on what is best for your shared children. It can be argued that attending summer camp is a worthwhile activity to occupy the kids. Their other parent might readily agree to split the difference in costs.

If that approach fails, we can review your case and make a recommendation as to whether it would be possible to revisit the issue in court.
