Gray divorce is on the rise

| Apr 29, 2020 | Divorce

It goes without saying that ending a marriage is one of the most difficult events in life. However, it may be surprising to know that the divorce rate as a whole is actually on the decline in California and the United States. Although, in one certain demographic, studies are showing that divorces are rapidly rising. More and more older spouses are ending their marriages, in a phenomenon that has become known as gray divorce.

Over the last two decades, studies have shown that the divorce rate has doubled for adults aged 50 and older in the United States. Of course, the big question is, what is causing this trend? In reality, it’s a combination of things. The societal stigmas surrounding divorce have faded in recent decades. Also, life expectancies have increased.

Many couples who fall into this demographic have already raised their families. After the children have left the nest, spouses sometimes find that they are different people than they were in the early days of their marriage. Many older spouses realize they likely have only about 20 years of life left and are just not willing to continue on in an unhappy marriage.

According to many experts, emotional disconnection is a major reason why many older spouses choose to separate. Although divorce can be stressful, it can also be a time of optimism and personal rediscovery. California residents who have questions regarding any aspect of divorce may want to consider speaking with a legal representative. An attorney experienced in family law can provide answers and guidance to help individuals navigate this difficult experience.
