Overcoming depression after a difficult divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 16, 2020 | Divorce

It goes without saying that a marital breakup is never a fun thing to experience. Whether the split is a total surprise or mutual, anyone in California who goes through a divorce can expect to ride an emotional rollercoaster. Since divorce is a form of loss, the feelings experienced often mirror the same emotions that occur when someone passes away. Of these, depression can be the most difficult to overcome. Depression is more than just sadness, as it can lead to a number of physical and emotional problems and also diminish an individual’s ability to function.

Depression can come and go, but it is estimated that nearly one in six individuals will go through depression at some point in their lives. When a marriage ends, feeling sad is normal. However, if a person’s mood is decreased for several weeks or more, he or she may be suffering from depression. The first step in overcoming depression is admitting that help is needed. This is nothing to be ashamed of, as depression has claimed the lives of thousands of people.

If symptoms of depression have been occurring for several weeks, it is recommended to contact a doctor. Be sure to document symptoms as well as any medications or supplements. The doctor may also recommend seeking the services of a mental health professional such as a psychiatrist. The physician or psychiatrist may prescribe antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications. These can facilitate healing, but can also lead to destructive behavior and/or addiction, so follow the doctor’s orders closely and take the medication as directed.

Going through mood swings or negative emotions is normal following a divorce. However, remain vigilant and aware of the feelings experienced and how long these feelings persist. A good legal representative is crucial in helping any California resident get through this challenging time. An attorney skilled in family law issues can answer difficult questions and protect personal rights.
