Jennifer Lopez asks for name change in divorce filings

While many women choose to keep their married name after a divorce, others do not. There are those that want to have their name changed back to their maiden names or names from a previous marriage. Some women continue to use their name from before the marriage because of their careers. Then there are those who take their husband's name, but continue to be known by their name before the nuptials. This is the case with Jennifer Lopez.

After her marriage to singer Mark Anthony in 2004, she took his legal last name of Muniz; however, many fans may not have realized this. When Anthony filed for divorce in 2012, he said in his petition to the court that it was due to "irreconcilable differences." Lopez has now filed a response to that divorce petition. She is requesting that her name be legally changed to Jennifer Lopez and that she be awarded physical custody of the couple's twins. The children, a boy and a girl, are age 5.

It only took a few days after Anthony's divorce from Dayanara Torres Delgado was finalized before the couple married. It appears that both Lopez and Anthony are now romantically linked to others. Lopez has hinted at another marriage in the future, possibly to her current beau, Casper Smart. Anthony is dating Chloe Green, who is the heiress to Topshop.

Lopez still holds on to the childhood fairytale of being married, saying that she likes "the idea of it" and always has.

For those contemplating divorce, there are many issues that will likely need to be addressed, such as child custody, child support, alimony and property division. A family law attorney can help protect your rights during such proceedings and work to preserve what you have brought into the marriage or are rightfully entitled to.
